Durmitor with children: The kingdom of lakes and canyons

Where to Stay?

  • Žabljak: The main town at the entrance to the national park. It offers the widest selection of apartments, hotels, and villas. It’s the most convenient base for all your excursions.

  • Family Villas and Ethno-Villages: In the surroundings of Žabljak, you can find cozy wooden houses with fireplaces and private plots, creating a feeling of complete unity with nature.

What to Do?

Black Lake (Crno Jezero)

  • The Route: The circular path around the lake is about 3.5 km long and can be covered at a leisurely pace in 1-1.5 hours. It is completely safe and accessible even for parents with strollers and very young children.

  • For Kids: Turn the walk into a quest: count the ducks, look for animal tracks on the shore, skip stones in the water. You can have a picnic on the shore.

The Tara River Canyon & Đurđevića Tara Bridge

  • The View from the Bridge: Drive right up to the bridge—the views will take your breath away, even the children’s. It’s a fantastic spot for photos.

  • Descent to the River: For families with older children (6-7+), we recommend descending to the river via the famous steps. The system of stairs and footpaths takes about 15-20 minutes to go down. At the bottom, you’ll find turquoise water and small beaches for a swim.

  • Rafting: For families with teenagers (12+), rafting on the Tara River will be the highlight of the trip. There are routes of varying duration, even two-day trips with overnight stays in camps.

Cable Car to Mount Štit

This is a Must-Do for everyone! The ride in a modern cabin takes about 15 minutes and offers incredible panoramic views of Žabljak, the Black Lake, and the mountain ranges. There is a viewing platform at the top. For children, it’s an absolute delight.

The Ice Cave (Ledena Pećina)

An easy hiking trail (about 40 minutes one way) from the Black Lake will lead you to a unique cave where ice persists even in summer. Kids will love the cool temperature and the sense of mystery.
